Overview
Planetary Scale partners with climate and energy-transition companies as their strategic finance arm. The founders we work with are turning breakthrough science into groundbreaking companies across energy, materials, transport, industry, and agriculture, and getting from the lab to scale requires a clear strategy and strong financial leadership. We’ve helped them raise hundreds of millions in venture and debt funding and get through the hardest moments on their path to scale.
We’re hiring a Chief of Staff and AI Enablement Lead to work closely with our CEO on the special projects and initiatives that will dramatically improve how we operate and how we deliver for the founders and leadership teams we work with. Most of that effort will focus on how our client delivery teams work and the tools and processes they use to solve problems and create value for our clients. Secondary focus areas include our go-to-market execution, internal research and data management, team engagement, and the sourcing, hiring and onboarding of talent. You’ll use AI extensively to build new tools, improve the way we work, and give each of our team members new superpowers. Some of the things you build will become standalone products that we offer alongside our consulting and advisory services.
The Role
You’ll be our CEO’s partner on the firm’s top priorities. That means taking an initiative from a rough idea to something that runs: scoping the problem, building the plan and the analysis, doing much of the work yourself, and bringing the team along so the change sticks. Alongside these areas, there will be special projects that don’t fit neatly into any of them.
You’ll spend at least half of your time building and working with AI. You’ll use AI coding agents to build tools, automate workflows and solve complex problems, and you’ll help everyone on our team to adopt and deploy AI in their own work. You don’t need an engineering background, but you will need product judgment, process discipline, and a lot of curiosity and imagination.
A significant part of the job will be done outside of AI. You’ll help our CEO to sharpen our company strategy, craft proposals, refine thought leadership content, and occasionally jump in to help a client-facing team tackle a new challenge or meet a deadline.
You’ll have frequent check-ins with our CEO to set priorities, work through problems and keep initiatives moving. You’ll also be in regular contact with teammates whose work your projects touch, and will play a key role in our monthly and quarterly team calls. In between, you’ll develop ideas in shared documents and decks, refining them together live and in your own time.
The scope is wide on purpose. You’ll typically work across 2-4 priorities and initiatives at a time, and when a workstream grows towards a full-time job, you’ll hire someone to hand it off to. Depending on where your strengths and interests pull you, you may end up building out an operations team under your leadership, grow further into a strategic chief-of-staff, or move into a functional leadership role (e.g. go-to-market).
- You’ll take on special projects and firm-level initiatives with our CEO, from scoping and analysis through to a working result, and support client work with analyses, research and the preparation that keeps engagements moving.
- You’ll improve how our client delivery teams operate: the workflows, templates and tools behind their client work. That includes carrying tools we’ve proven with one client to the next, and taking our fundraise-management product from a working prototype to a SaaS-level tool our clients and their investors log into.
- You’ll support our organization and talent strategy, including how we source and hire people, how we onboard them, and how we help them develop here.
- You’ll support our go-to-market strategy, including proposals, the content engine, and other initiatives that grow our presence and standing in the climate ecosystem.
- You’ll lead our internal AI enablement across all of this: build and ship tools with AI coding agents and own their quality, run working sessions, pair with teammates on their builds, check the tools they build before a client relies on them, and keep our shared guides current as the tools change.
- You’ll keep internal operations running — client onboarding logistics, tools administration, cross-team coordination — and find the next thing to automate before anyone asks.
About You
You hold yourself to a high standard — and you want to work somewhere that does the same. A few things that matter here:
- You take ownership before you’re asked. When something needs doing, you do it, and when something looks wrong, you say so. You’ll often be moving several initiatives at once while our CEO is offline, and at a firm this size, work that everyone assumes is someone else’s job usually doesn’t get done.
- You think deeply before you build. Before you build a tool or a plan, you think deeply about the problem you’re solving and the context your solution needs to operate in. You gather input from others and research effectively, and you see the value in creating a roadmap even though you know it will inevitably change as you make progress.
- You make the people around you more effective. Whether it’s communicating proactively, empathizing with others, or being able to envision challenges around the next corner, you have a knack for making things work smoothly.
- Accuracy is your baseline. Our team’s work informs high-stakes decisions for founders, and the analyses and tools you build will be a foundation for that work. You check your work, look for errors before they become obvious, and test thoroughly before going live.
- You learn fast and stay curious. This role will involve constant variety and rapid learning across business domains, client challenges, a complex tool stack, and an ever-expanding technology frontier. If that doesn’t sound exciting to you, then this role is not for you.
Beyond that, for this role specifically:
- Mission is a first-order consideration for you. The people who do their best work here care about what the firm does. You want your skills pointed at climate and the energy transition, and that’s a real part of why you’re applying.
- You bring consulting-grade structure to messy problems, whether the problem is a client workflow, a hiring plan or a push to grow our presence. You size them, sequence them, and work through them in an order you can defend. This typically comes from a few years at MBB or a comparable top-tier analytical environment.
- You’ve shipped product, and you build with AI every day. Whether you’ve been an engineer, a product manager, a founder, or just someone building things to make your own life easier, you’ve brought new tools to life and made them work in the real world.
- You can teach what you know. You’ve helped people without your technical background take up a new tool or a new way of working, and they kept using it after you stepped back.
- You write clearly and quickly. Your written updates get the point across clearly and succinctly, and your drafts of proposals, plans and articles need a light edit rather than a rewrite.
It helps if you bring finance or venture literacy (burn, runway, SAFEs, board cadence), experience in go-to-market work, a creative or content bent, or experience on a remote team that works across time zones.
What makes this different
A front seat in building the firm. You’ll work side by side with our CEO on how the firm runs, grows and serves its clients, and help shape where it goes next. It’s the kind of scope and influence that typically takes far longer to reach at a larger firm.
A steep curve and a supportive team. You’ll learn how venture-backed climate companies raise money and run their finances from people who do it every day, with frequent and direct feedback. We hold a high bar and invest seriously in getting you there.
A share in the upside. Our shadow client equity program gives you a long-term stake in the financial success of the climate companies we serve — one of the most distinctive things about working here.
We’re fully remote with team members in the US, Colombia, Poland and the Philippines. Our offer includes performance bonus, client equity exposure and 30 days of PTO.
Planetary Scale is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate candidates on their merits and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.
